WordPress design for veteran’s nonprofit organization

Founded by a combat veteran with a passionate heart to help other veterans. At the time the sole means of outreach was a four page brochure. Without a web presence he was unable to reach those who needed help. A versatile WordPress site would enable him to build the community he envisioned.

Building community with support and involvement

The range of assistance includes programs, job resources, events, membership opportunities and an emergency hotline. Involvement is encouraged with an interactive calendar, monthly newsletter subscription, volunteer opportunities and online option for donations.

Building community with quick and easy access to resources

Links are placed in multiple locations and formats, including buttons, icon grids, visually prominent Call to Action banners and crisis phone numbers on every page. The sticky main menu is always within easy reach.

Building community with an events calendar linked to a blog

The interactive calendar allows members the option to post events. Events can be added to the calendar from the blog by assigning posts to an “events” category, which is configured to display automatically. Past events can also be highlighted using this method.

Building community by creating a space for veterans

The site is designed as a space for veterans where they are understood, respected and connected with other veterans. This is encouraged by content provided by the vets themselves, photos taken by soldiers in the field and excerpts from their writing in block quotes. A photo montage of soldiers’ images on the home page symbolizes honor, respect and loss.

Building community with support for disabled and homeless veterans

The design complies with accessibility guidelines, including font, color, concise grouping of topics and captioned images. Responsive to varying computers and devices, the code is written with backward compatibility for outdated or limited browsers including Internet Explorer.
